  • At the seventh BizNews Conference BNC#7 in Hermanus, renowned political scientist and prolific BizNews contributor RW Johnson delivered a thought-provoking keynote on South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU). He dissected the deep divide between ANC activists and the party’s broader voter base, revealing surprising polling data that shows public support for the GNU despite fierce criticism from within ANC ranks. Johnson also explored the fading influence of the Left, the EFF’s decline, and the critical role of business in shaping the ANC’s future leadership battle. Can the GNU sustain itself until 2029, or will internal ANC power struggles determine its fate?
    In a lively Q&A session after his keynote speech, RW Johnson sat down with BizNews founder Alec Hogg to tackle topics ranging from political funding scandals to the ANC’s precarious financial situation and South Africa’s international entanglements. Johnson discussed the influence of foreign money on local politics, the ANC’s alleged funding ties to Iran, and the fading power of the SACP. He also dissected the challenges of breaking patronage politics, the role of intelligence agencies in exposing corruption, and the GNU’s uncertain future beyond 2027. Could economic performance determine its survival, or will ANC infighting bring it down first?

    I was left concluding that the white businessmen that funded the CR17 platform at that ANC conference saw their funds channeled to ANC activists at that auction and the perpetuation of the kakistocracy. There are no moral or ethical grounds to do that again.

    RW is also off the mark regarding surface area size - Canada is marginally bigger than the USA - 9,984,670 sq km vs 9,833,517 sq km - and if we take into account how much area in each country is covered by lake water (in Canada 9%), then the US is bigger.

    The GNU, incredibly, is the closest that SA has *ever* come to democracy, the ANC having hung on to the coattails of its coronation in 1994. RW's understanding of SA is brilliant. Having fallen prey to TDS (from which few escape), he is though innocent of the US zeitgeist. Not his fault; having spent his life inside the hallowed chambers of the Establishment. Unfortunately, this emotionalism on his part makes him, for me, unwatchable, going forward.

I doubt Biden even read much (if at all). He didnt even sign his own orders yet alone probably read them.

    I respect Bill Johnson's political analyses, but I find a few holes in his speech. The one is that he is dismissive of the view that broadly speaking South Africans of all colors are basically and fundamentally Christian conservative. His retort that he doesn't think that religion will play any part in an election is naive and narrow-minded considering the many centuries of Christian conservative power that previously existed and the major powers of modern politics, particularly Britain. It is not about religions. It is about spirituality and consciousness, and an acknowledgement that a greater power and universal design exists universally. If he doesn't acknowledge that then perhaps that should be pointed out in the introduction and referred to so that people can place his comments in its narrow perspective and just enjoy his vast knowledge and political analysis.

    RW Johnson just blew it again. His Trump comments are really stupid and I guess typically political science teaching. But he is clueless about strategy and thinks money controls everything. His anti religious attitude distorts his real value as a good analyst. He does make you think of how other things play a role. God is in control and he does not take that into account.

    • @ianwilson9716
      @ianwilson9716 4 дня назад +3

      You miss the point.
      He was not being anti-religeous. He merely stated that the majority of ANC supporters were religious as compared to the radical elite.
      In other words, the leaders are separated from their constituency.
