I just wanted to see this site's opinion on femboys. Also please don't let this thread devolve into discourse about the word "trap".

Is "femboy" the same as "trap" in the anime community? Or does it mean something else?

Outside of it it certainly does not seem to mean the same thing.

Outside of it “femboy” seems to largely simply be synonymous with “pastel emo”, as in essentially “scene fashion” in brighter colors and it in practiced it's a very sexualized term.

Some people, I suppose, sought to replace the word “trap” with this, but it's a crude replacement at best. If I search for the term I tend to arrive at images similar to this one, which is a very different thing from traps:

No they're different. @napkinmonster explains it pretty well.

Femboys are just men with feminine characteristics, so you can still tell if they're male. Traps on the other hand are almost indistinguishable from girls, hence the term "trap".

I used to think that I was a femboy. Then I realized that I was a woman.

I'm not really interested in femboys, because I'm not interested in males.

One can argue that drawing a venn diagram of “male trap”, “male crossdresser” and “femboy” would create three overlapping circles.

A while back, I read the Japanese Wikipedia article on a somewhat related Japanese term and it also pointed out in that case that there are many opinions on the meaning of the term. But the term “femboy” started outside of cartoons, and was then applied to cartoon characters, whereas the term “trap” started inside of cartoons, and was later applied to live persons.

Of course, something that helps is that female cartoon characters are so often drawn with perfectly flat chests that many forget how rare that is for, say, 16 year olds in real life.

Interestingly, there is also a Japanese perspective on similar terms:

The Japanese Wikipedia article I read noted that some are of the opinion that an “otokonoko” does not need to strictly be convincingly female, but I think it suffices. Many trap characters, such as Saika shown in this thread, do not crossdress whatsoever.

Of course, one can blend degrees how one sees fit, as one can with other things such as say lolis with many debates whether, say, Taiga Aikasa truly qualifies due to the long legs:

There is some debate whether Ryuunosuke Akasaka would qualify.

Like… in anime or IRL? In anime, it’s alright, usually femboys are either for trap jokes or ‘I want to become manly’ storylines 🤷‍♀️. In IRL, I don’t care! People should be able to express themselves however they want to 👌

In regular anime:
Visually I don't really care, I usually find both the humor and drama surrounding them kinda cringey though? In a world in which androgynous idols are the no.1 beauty standard, it seems just kinda silly to have an entire character focused on OH NO I LOOK TOO GIRLY NO GIRL WILL EVER CONSIDER ME. And don't get me started on the "but people crush on him because they think he might be a girl, isn't that funny!" stuff. It's just so..urgh.
When they don't fall into those tropes, they are fine and I'll like or dislike them like any other character just based on their personality and role in the story :)

In BL:
I lean towards hating them, unless they are paired with each other, because it always feels like a cop-out. Of course, irl, all men are valid, regardless of how they look or their interests, but in fiction it really bothers me when one half of the couple is always basically just a girl with a p*nis because god forbid the - usually female - readers don't have a self-insert vessel 🙄
GL doesn't feel the need to always make one of the girls extremely manly and butch, so why is the opposite the case for BL? Just annoys me.

Oozora Hibari is a transgender woman, not a femboy.

There's a huge difference.

I absolutely don't like it when anime boys are too feminine to the point where they could be confused for an actual girl, like
,
or

I also don't like anime guys who act overly "cute", dress in "feminine" cutesy clothes and talk with "cutesy" high pitched voices just for the sake of cuteness either. It feels forced and is actually very much uncute to me. I like natural cuteness not this fake brand of forced "kawaii" -__-

Most of them have sadly no real personality and are either there to be "traps" for a heterosexual male audience (both, actual transgender characters and "femboys" too), are either a whiny and very childlike uke in a yaoi for a heterosexual female audience, or they are there to be laughed at.

I'm trans. I unfortunately, still have male genitalia. I have to be on HRT for a total of one year before I can get a consultation for SRS.
